Continuing Commitment
From its inception, Osborne Industries has followed a strategic plan that
includes a dedication to product development based on fundamental research and
use of the latest, most effective technology possible. The Demonstration Farm is
an example of this dedication. The design of the Farm was developed with the
help of key Osborne customers who were asked to help with concept review.
Construction began in September, 1993, and the first animals arrived two months
later.
Multi-Phase Construction
In the first phase of development, facilities for 300 sows have been built.
Extension of facility size to 1,200 sows is planned to leverage experience
gained from the first phase to improve the utility of the total facility. Farm
site infrastructure is complete and designed for a 1,200-sow farrow-to-finish
system.
Farm Personnel
A Farm staff that includes a Farm Manager and several Production Assistants
operates the Farm as a profit centre. A Farm Technical Director supervises
research. Osborne Research Scientists and Project Engineers conduct actual
projects and studies, with assistance from the Farm staff.
Farm Performance Records
Farm performance records and comparisons are available to the general public,
subject to prior approval by the Technical Director. Results of particularly
interesting tests and evaluations may also be found in technical publications
from time to time.
Bio security
A high-health herd of animals is maintained on the Farm. Strict rules of
entry must be observed to avoid contaminating the herd by new pathogens, which
might be accidentally transmitted by the staff or visitors. Therefore, all
visitors must agree to be isolated from pigs for 48 hours prior to arrival at
the Farm. All visitors must shower and change into company-provided clothing to
enter the farm. All Farm visits are escorted and originate at the corporate
offices. Such visits must be scheduled at least one week in advance of arrival
and be approved by the Technical Director and Farm Manager.
